Summary of library activities in Ghana in January

Librarians: Sherigu: Nsolebna Diana Abane
Gowrie-Kunkua: Atule Doris
Sumbrungu : Amoah Marinus and Awilumbono Patience

The Sumbrungu Community Library focused on improving the English vocabulary of young patrons. Group and individual reading sessions, socialization, and games were organized. Miss Patience led a group reading of “David’s day at the mine,” while individual reading sessions encouraged patrons to share their understanding of the stories. Life hacks were taught, and activities included playing indoor games and watching educational movies. Some students were given basic computer skills training, with plans to teach Microsoft Word in the future. The library conducted group and individual reading, played indoor games, watched educational videos, and reviewed previous weeks’ learning. Librarians led reading sessions, aiming for at least three to four books daily. A video show featured the Thai movie “Ong Bak”. Challenges included attendance fluctuations due to holidays and the need for better furniture. Visitors from Bolgatanga Technical University and the coordinator Clement Amii contributed to the positive atmosphere.

January at Gowrie Kunkua Community Library saw fluctuating attendance due to holiday extensions into the second week. Activities included group and individual reading, storytelling, clean-up exercises, tree watering, temporary fencing of the library compound, and games. A special reading time for children involved group reading, dictation, and explanation of key words. Visitors included Mr. Amii Clement and other community members who participated in activities such as tree fencing to prevent damage.

Bolga-Sherigu Community Library experienced an encouraging attendance spike as students returned to school. Activities included group and individual reading, storytelling, and playing various games. Popular books included “Had I Known,” “Courtesy for Boys and Girls,” and “Kente for a King.” Students borrowed books to read in their classrooms. The coordinator, Mr. Clement Amii, monitored and supervised activities, engaging with students and encouraging them to take their studies seriously. His visit motivated patrons to utilize their free time for reading.
