September activities in the Ghana libraries

The three village libraries in Ghana, Gowrie Kunkua Community Library, Sherigu Library, and Sumbrungu Community Library, all reported their activities for the month of September 2023. In Gowrie Kunkua, there was a significant increase in patronage during the first and second weeks, driven by students preparing for their terminal exams. However, patronage declined in the later weeks. The library hosted various activities, including a quiz competition that saw girls winning, a successful clean-up exercise, storytelling sessions, group and individual reading sessions, and games to engage children and keep them coming to the library. They received visits from parents, guardians, and the library coordinator, Mr. Amii Clement. Sherigu saw high patronage in the first week due to students studying for exams, with lower attendance in the second and third weeks during the holidays, and a resurgence in the fourth week when school resumed. Activities included individual and group reading, storytelling, games, and borrowing books to read at home. The library coordinator, Clement, conducted supervision and inspection visits. Sumbrungu Community Library reported fewer activities due to the rainy season and students going on vacation. They extended their game days, helped patrons build vocabulary, and assisted with exam preparation. They also encouraged reading and engaged students in solving puzzles and mathematical questions. Challenges included the need for more furniture. All three libraries expressed gratitude to donors and supporters for their continuous assistance in promoting education and literacy in the region.
