Biblionef Ghana supporting FAVL libraries and school libraries in Bolgatanga area

Paul Ayutoliya, FAVL-CESRUD library coordinator writes:

Rex Asanga, Cesrud Director, was able to get support from an NGO called Biblionef Ghana. Biblionef Ghana was able to support 20 basics (Primary and Junior High) schools in Sumbrungu West B circuit with donation of story books for pupils and small shelves to stock the books. Selected teachers from the 20 schools were taken through a two days training by official of Biblionef who came from Accra on how to manage their school libraries, I took part in that training, Mr. Rex have asked that as I tour those basic schools with the libraries, whatever support or technical assistance they need that I able to support I should do so. I am hopeful this year that there is going to be more collaboration with teachers of the beneficiary school to help the young ones enjoy reading. Let me note that the school libraries only operate during school hours, during the night session many of the patrons from far who have develop interest for reading do join their peers at the Sumbrungu Community Library for reading and/ or learning.

Officials from Biblionef Ghana as part of the training workshop visited some the schools and interacted with pupils and teachers, they also paid a visit to the Sumbrungu Community Library with Mr. Rex. They were very impressed with the materials they saw stock in the library for users. They expressed their appreciations to the FAVL for the laudable initiative and promised to get the library either two desktop computers or laptops and other reading materials when they return this year in March to visit the school libraries and assess how the libraries are functioning.

Ghana libraries supporting reading in Upper East

CESRUD/FAVL Ghana community Libraries resumed work on the 9th of January 2018. All the three libraries were cleaned in order to get premises conducive for reading and learning to kick-start the new year. On January 11th, the three libraries were opened to the public. As expected for these earlier days at school, attendance in all three libraries was low for the first week following the break. However, by the second week, the patronage had increased. Many of the patrons were seen reading different kinds of story books, as well as playing games under the guidance of the librarians. During these first and second weeks at work, I was able to read a number of different story books with patrons.

teenprincessghanaPrime among the story books I enjoy reading and almost shared it all the time with patrons or pupils because the moral it has to patrons or pupils is entitled Teen Princess, written Diana Mcbagonluri. Here is a summary: Dede Nortey was a girl of many dreams. She was also intelligent as well as confident as a result of her hard work. Dede was always seen at the library with her best friend Naa.  At the library they always read and exchanged different kinds of story books, and completed their home work. Dede balanced all these with her household chores. Dede was a little girl who had a very big dream. She wanted to be a Teen Princess and she was prepared to overcome any challenge to achieve this dream. But as Dede was soon to find out, dreams can be very different from reality. The odds were against Dede the moment she entered the contest. At one point the only option left for her was to quit the contest, if she was to avoid embarrassment. But the words of her mother kept ringing in her head. These were the words of Dede’s mother to her long before she entered the contest: “You don’t need to paint your face to be a Teen Princess. What you need is your head.” And so with these words ringing in her head combined with her hard working spirit, she was able to overcome and be crowned the next Teen Princess. This particular story has a lot of challenging lessons to the young ones who want to be good readers and achieve whatever dreams they want to achieve in the future to work hard, no matter the circumstances, hard work pays.

All the schools I have since visited this year, what I do normally is to go with two copies of this particular story books; one will be given to the head teacher or his assistant to go through with me as I read to the students/pupils, whiles I’m reading and students/pupils are doing the listening, the teacher role is to normally put down some questions from the story, after I’m done reading, I will ask questions to assess the impact of the reading. They responses to the questions and contributions so far have been very great at the schools I have visited.  Is an idea the teachers have embraced, news of this fruitful exercise have spread to other basic schools I’m yet to visit, teachers and pupils of these other schools expect to see me soon in their respective schools to talk to their students on the importance of reading and also share with students/pupils stories that will stimulate or trigger them to like reading. And so more tours to the basic schools around the community libraries and perhaps beyond are to be expected in this first quarter. Other books read include: Mumaizu and the Hippos, The Lucky One, Laali Saves the King among others.

Visite au village de Rouko au Burkina Faso avec des coopérants qui partage notre mission de la promotion de la lecture

Le 17 janvier quelques membres du staff de FAVL étaient à Rouko.  Ils ont rencontré Patrice Malloit, Patrice Collasse, Liliane Collasse et deux autres membres de l’association de Mont-Saint-Aignon qui appui une jumelage à Rouko. Ils ont présenté l’association, leur objectif, leur réalisation et leur domaine d’intervention. Ils ont également présenté leur bibliothèque qui est petit mais qui comprend 1500 livres. Ensuite il était à tour de FAVL de presenter les activités que nous menons à Rouko et ailleurs. Ils ont montré un grand intérêt, à travers divers questions sur nos activités, la gestion de la bibliothèque et du bibliothécaire, et un éventuel partenariat. Ils ont déjà visité la bibliothèque et ils ont également apprécié le travail qui est fait notamment les livres-photos que nous réalisons. Ils se disent être intéressé par ces livres et en voudraient certainement. C’est avec une note de satisfaction que nous avons quitté Rouko pour Kongoussi.


A visit to Bougounam library in #Burkina Faso

FAVL program officer Alidou Boué spent a day at Bougounam library earlier this week.  Here are some photos: Zebret Moumouni, the librarian (who also decorated the building) in his hat at his desk (looking at a great Atlas in the library collection), a reader, and a collection of new books for the library. The library was recently hooked up to the electric grid.

Update from Kitengesa Community Library in Uganda

From Kate Parry:  We were at Kitengesa last week. The library’s Self-Help Group (that emerged from the Women’s Group) is going strong, and so is our work with the deaf; we are planning to put in for an All Children Reading grant for the latter, to translate African Storybook stories into Ugandan Sign Language. We have ASb’s support, so it only remains now to get the grant (we probably won’t, since it’s very competitive, but you never know). The village is growing apace, with the Afripads factory and our own maize mill going up—the maize mill, in fact, is ready to start production. We planned a trial before leaving last week but couldn’t do it because there was no electricity that day.

Peinture de la bibliothèque communale de Mané

La journée du mardi 16 janvier 2018 a été marquée par une activité de peinture de la bibliothèque communale de Mané. La commune de Mané est une des communes de la province du Sanmatenga, une zone bénéficiaire des bibliothèques implantées par FAVL dans le cadre du partenariat du projet Beoog Biiga de CRS et FAVL. Pour l’équipe de FAVL-BF, implanté une bibliothèque ne se limite là. Il faut l’entretenir de telle sorte qu’elle soit vivante. C’est ainsi qu’une équipe du staff composée du représentant national, du coordonnateur régional, d’une chargée de programme, d’une l’animateur et du bibliothécaire a passée cette journée pour faire la peinture. Durant l’activité, l’équipe a reçu la visite et le soutien des autorités communales notamment le Préfet. Il est venu encourager l’équipe et a apprécié une telle belle initiative. Aussi, l’équipe s’est satisfaits de cette journée qui leur a permis d’avoir des connaissances sur le métier de la peinture. Elle envisage mener cette activité dans toutes les bibliothèques du réseau. Merci au Préfet pour sa disponibilité à de venir nous encourager et accompagner.

Painting the community library of Mané

FAVL Burkina Faso rep Sanou Dounko led a team of FAVL staff to refresh the library of Mané, and also show team members that refreshing the paint was not a big deal! Sounds like the team had fun (and worked hard) and felt proud of a new goldenrod (I’m not that good with colors) library!  The prefect (regional administrator) came by the encourage the team.

Association FITIL/ACLEM dans les locaux de FAVL-BF

fitilLe vendredi 12 janvier 2018, Bettie Petith et Bako Basoin de l’Association Action pour un Lendemain Meilleur (FITIL/ACLEM) ont rendu une visite de courtoisie au siège de FAVL-BF. Ils ont expliqué ce que leur association, qui a vu le jour en 2014, est chargé de parrainer des enfants dans la province du Passoré. Vu l’intérêt croissant des communautés pour la réussite des enfants parrainés, les populations ont émis leur souhaite d’avoir une bibliothèque pour améliorer la qualité et le niveau de leur enfants.

C’est ainsi que les premières responsables sont venus voir FAVL, qui a une certaine expérience d’implantation de bibliothèques communautaires en milieu rural. Après les échanges, ils ont félicité FAVL pour la maitrise de la mise en place des bibliothèques, la production de livres photos et ceux du Centre Multimédia de Houndé. Ils se sont dit satisfait des activités menées et le partage de toutes les informations nécessaires qu’ils souhaiteraient avoir. Avant de partir, ils ont prévu de visiter une des bibliothèques de FAVL implantée dans la province du Zondoma.

Ready to start work on a mobile book-mobile in Burkina Faso!

Thanks to a generous end of year donation by a long-time FAVL friend, a GlobalGiving project that we had planned many years ago is now ready to be implemented in January 2018.  We will keep you posted. The team in Kaya, in northern Burkina Faso, did a “test-run” a couple weeks ago, taking 150 books from the library out to a primary school, for group reading and learning about the library. When the project is implemented, kids in schools will be loaned books once a week. We hope it will be an effective way to leverage the library collection. Stay tuned!
