Good performance of new librarian in Sherigu community library in Ghana

The newly appointed librarian Miss Cecilia Adombila Akansige is doing a good job so far. Since her assumption, she has so far held a number of group readings with patrons, and repaired or sewed some books. She is committed to her duties as a librarian; I am very happy how she quickly picked up after the first week of orientation and is doing such a good work at library. I am impressed with her work during my visit to the Sherigu Library both daily and night sessions.

End of November 2018 librarian meeting, Ghana

This is a report about the end of the month of November meeting held at the Sumbrungu Library on 1st December 2018. The Coordinator who chairs the meeting welcomed everyone to the meeting. The agenda of the meeting centered on the performance of the respective Community Libraries up to date, what have been done well and what need to improve. Each librarian wasgiven the opportunity to say a word on happenings in their respective library for the past months. The Sumbrungu Librarian, Mr. Timothy Apenoore mentioned a number of reading programs, games and visitors received in the library. He said patrons were getting more used to reading than before. He mentioned of a number of books read some of which are: The Lucky One, The Magic Goat, Kente for a King, Do not Keep Quiet, The Cat and Dog Series and many more. He also mentioned the different kind of games and video shows which the children like In his own words, library performance have been good save to say the users’ requests for more subject books and computers. The Sherigu librarian, Miss Cecilia Adombila talked about reading activities that she held for the month of November. Attendance to the library had been good in her words also. She also touched books she read during the month and the mending or repaired of some books. The challenge or problem in the library according to her is the non functioning of all the three fans, six broken louvre blades which cause a lot of dust to books, tables and chairs. She appealed for support to fix such problems. The Gowrie-Kunkua Library also said their library performance had been good. The reading programs such as quiz competition, group reading, individual reading, story telling, games and visits to the library by some parents kept the library patrons visiting always. He ended by also mentioning again that they need fans in the library.

Commenting on all that was said, the chair thanked them for the good work and asked that they continue to discharge their duties well. As librarians the chair told them; we also have a duty to look around and see those people who can help in one way or the other and approach them either through letters or personal contact, we can write to the Assembly men, NGOs and other bodies that can offer any support to promote reading. The chair assured them that their concerns however would be forwarded. We had not meet for quite some time which was a short coming the chair admitted, we will henceforth hold all our end of month meetings. The librarians read their reports loud to the hearing of all, a number of correction were made. A careful look at their reports sent will show this. The chair took the opportunity and introduced the newly appointed Sherigu Librarian to other librarians. She also got to know the other librarians of the other community libraries. They promised to work hand in hand in promoting reading at their respective communities.

Secrétaire générale de la mairie de Niankorodougou soutien la bibliothécaire

Mariam Soulama (à gauche) est la secrétaire générale de la mairie de Niankorodougou. Malgré ses responsabilités, elle passe de temps en temps échanger avec Karidia, la bibliothécaire et l’encourager dans son travail. Le mardi 13 novembre, elle a eu l’occasion d’échanger avec Guy Roland de FAVL en visite de travail à la bibliothèque. Quoi de plus normal pour immortaliser cet instant !

Reading at the Gowrie-Kunkua Community Library in Ghana

I paid a visit today (December 4) to the Gowrie-Kunkua Community Library. Patrons who came from the Kunkua primary and Junior High School read with me and the librarian the story of the Crocodile Bread, Teen Princess, and All about Ama. Some parents were also at the library to read with us. I took the opportunity to talk to the pupils/students the need to always make time and attend the library to read books. The pupils were happy to be part of today’s daily sessions at the library. They requested for more subject books some of which includes Science, I.C.T, and Basic Design Technology. We had good time reading together.

Kadi à la bibliothèque communale de Niankorodougou au Burkina Faso

Kadi vient de temps en temps à la bibliothèque communale de Niankorodougou pour découvrir de nouvelles choses. Aujourd’hui, elle a découvert le livre photo intitulé Le petit trompeur de Dimikuy de Ezequiel Olvera et s’identifie déjà au petit personnage de ce livre adapté à son âge.

November update from Ghana libraries

This is a summary of the librarians report for November 2018. Library’s attendance during November per the librarian’s reports has been very good and encouraging. Overall 4,277 visits were recorded to the three libraries in November.

At the Sumbrungu Library, reading and /or learning activities have been good both daily and night sessions. Group reading and discussions of story books, time to share with games were the dominant activities. The newly AMO games that were brought by Biblionef Ghana and Biblionef International brought more joy and fun to the library users. Some of the double track system students who are currently on vacations and the regular patrons are making good use of the respective libraries especially during the evening sessions; they visit the libraries to read their notes, story books and share ideas. The daily session is mostly dominated by basic pupils.

At the Sherigu library for the month, the new librarian reports that patronage has been very encouraging with lots of reading activities, she also touch on something I met her doing during one of my usual visits which is worthy of commendation, she bought treads and sewed most the books that their pages were removing, it was such a great work by Miss Cecilia right after her official assumption of duty and then also her efforts in retrieving two missing books from the library. She touched on some story books read by her some of which includes; The Teen Princess, Shoeshine Girl, the Regret of the Drunkard among others during the month. The major problem in the library is still the non-functioning of fans.

At the Gowrie-Kunkua Community Library, lots of reading activities with games and cleanup exercises were the activities of the month. Major problem is still the need for fans in the library.

Sorti de la bibliotheque mobile Penelope au Burkina Faso

Le vendredi 30 novembre 2018, la BMP a effectué une sortie en plein cœur de la ville de Kaya. Au cours de cette sortie, elle a tout d’abord fait une escale à côté d’un kiosque de vendeur de café du nom de Ouédraogo Moumini. Là-bas, nous avons reçu les lecteurs adultes qui venaient prendre leur café du matin. Ceux-ci ont profité passer quelques temps de lecture avec nous et échanger sur la BMP. Pour eux ils voyaient la BMP mais ne savaient pas exactement ce qu’il fait. Pour d’autres ils pensaient que les livres étaient en vente ou il faut payer de l’argent avant d’avoir accès de les lire. De ce fait, j’ai expliqué objectif de la BMP et surtout l’impact de la lecture sur les personnes. Ouédraogo Issouf et Ouédraogo Kassoun ont chacun lu le livre en entier de Victoire impossible de Boukary Koutou. Environ deux heures passées sur le lieu a permis à ces adultes de lire et aux passants qui s’arrêtaient pour regarder et poser des questions. Les livres photos et les BD de Mady Kafando ont été les plus lu par les adultes. Les appréciations des uns et des autres n’ont pas été de longs discours. Simplement « Belle initiative pour les enfants, surtout longue vie à la BMP »

Après cette animation avec les adultes, nous nous sommes rendu à l’école de Wemtenga au environ de 12h. Nous avons reçu quelques élèves qui étaient présent sur les lieux. J’ai entamé l’activité avec cette minorité de fur et à mesure le nombre grandissait. Deux activités ont été fait avec les élèves : Un petit concours de lecture entre les garçons et les filles et un concours de jeu de puzzle. Les vainqueurs étaient applaudis par leurs camarades qui assistaient au jeu. Nous avons passé de très bons moments avec les élèves de cette école avant de rentrer avec la BMP.

Le premier club de lecture de la bibliothèque de Niankorodougou

Les élèves de Niankorodougou sont très heureux de pouvoir constituer le premier club de lecture de la bibliothèque. Ce sera un cadre pour discuter autour d’un livre, mener un débat ou encore organiser une activité de sensibilisation sur l’importance de la lecture auprès de leurs camarades. Ce poster est la preuve qu’ils sont motivés pour démarrer leurs activités. Rendez-vous les mercredis à la bibliothèque communale entre 14h et 15h.

New librarian for Sherigu community library in Ghana

Last October the CESRUD team held interviews for applicants for the librarianship position at the Sherigu Community Library. Myself and Cesrud project coordinator Mr. Johnson Agolmah and one of the Sherigu library committee member Mr. Amoah Francis who doubles as the assembly man for the area were the interview panel. Applicants were taken through a series of questions related to the library, the community, and some current affairs issues in the country.

At the end of the interviews, the panelists all settled on Miss Cecilia Adombila Akansige, a senior high school leaver who performed very well. She was eloquent, confident, and appeared to like reading. The panelists were convinced she will be able to do the job well. Effective 1st November, Mr. Zacchaeus, who is leaving to pursue his studies, will hand over the management of the library to the new librarian Miss Cecilia. She is expected to learn alongside with Mr. Zacchaeus on some basics things of how the library works. So we have getting a new librarian for the Sherigu Community Library and effective 1st November 2018, she will be starting work officially. First of its kind in the library history having a lady as the librarian!

 

Updates from four community libraries in Burkina Faso

One of the main jobs of FAVL is to support the various libraries in the network. burkina Faso has 34 libraries in the network. Here are some updates from this week.

  • In Niankorodougou the librarian is doing well. She was able to animate all four activities  that were programmed in this month. The activity that most stood out was a storytelling activity where the children were able to tell short stories among themselves. The reading club had 2 sessions of discussions. The first was attended by 24 students and the second 16. The library receives at least 20 children per working day. Her last book read is “A difficult return to the village.” She appreciated the book!
  • In Rouko, the Leaders are readers program is going well. It is the 6th and 5th grade students who read the most. For now, it’s a girl who has read more books. She is on her 114th book! It should be noted that it is the photo books and CMH that are the most read.
  • At Pensa, the librarian signed her contract and the accountant told her that she will have her motivational break in a week.
  • In Sebba, the library is well attended by children. The librarian was able to animate the activities that were programmed. His last book read is “Baba the rapper”. It must be said that a terrorist attack at a gendarmerie station at a dozen kilometers in the course of this week gives people fear. A curfew was introduced starting at 18h.

In French:

  • A Niankorodougou la bibliothécaire se porte bien. Elle a pu animer toutes les activités (4) qui ont été programmées dans ce mois. L’activité qui la beaucoup marquée c’est la dernière activité de contes ou les enfants ont pu raconter de petits contes cours entre eux. Le club de lecture a fait 2 séances de discussions. La première a vu la participation de 24 élèves et la seconde 16. Elle reçoit au moins 20 enfants par jour ouvrable. Son dernier livre lu est « Un retour difficile au village » elle a apprécié
  • A Rouko, le programme Leaders are readers se déroule bien. Ce sont les élèves de classes de la 6eme et 5eme qui lisent le plus. Pour, l’instant c’est une fille qui a lu plus de livres. Elle est à son 114eme livres. Il faut noter que ce sont les livres photos et CMH qui sont les plus lus.
  • A Pensa, la bibliothécaire a signé son contrat et le comptable lui a dit qu’elle aura ses aérés de motivation dans une semaine.
  • A Sebba, la bibliothèque est bien fréquentée par les enfants. Il a pu animer les activités qui ont été programmées. Son dernier livre lu est « Baba le rapport ». il faut dire qu’une attaque terroriste à un poste de gendarmerie à une douzaine de Kilomètre de au cours de cette semaine donne de la peur aux populations. Un couvre-feu est instauré à 18h

Séance de discussion autour d’une bande dessinée au Burkina Faso

DiscussionCe matin (27 novembre), le temps d’un délestage, le staff de FAVL a mené une petite discussion autour de la BD Kouka N°13 intitulée La malle du père de Bila. Cette bande dessinée est l’œuvre du RENLAC (Réseau national de lutte anti-corruption) qui met à nu les travers d’une société minée par ce fléau qui se comporte comme une gangrène. Kouka le personnage principal, modèle de vertu a fasciné les membres de la discussion. Mais une question se pose : combien sommes-nous aujourd’hui à pouvoir opposer un non catégorique ou encore à dénoncer toute tentative de corruption ?

Production de livres du centre multimédia de Houndé au Burkina Faso

CMH-2.jpgFAVL se veut l’un des acteurs majeurs dans la promotion de la lecture au Burkina. L’une des stratégies de l’association est de produire des livres et de les mettre à disposition des lecteurs des 34 bibliothèques de son réseau. Les récits sont recueillis auprès de talents locaux, illustrés et enfin édités par notre centre multimédia. Ces livres visent un public majoritairement composé d’enfants du primaire, suscitant ainsi chez eux le goût et la passion de la lecture.

 

Nouvelle série Békila disponible dans les bibliothèques au Burkina Faso !

Hakahoun smBékila va à l’école, Békila fête la fin de la saison pluvieuse, Békila voyage, le retour de Békila du village et Békila apprend le lavage des mains écrit par Sylvie Koura sont produit au centre multi media de Houndé. La gérante de la bibliothèque villageoise de Karaba Domboué Hakahoun, lit ces nouvelles séries qui sont disponible dans sa bibliothèque depuis le 15 novembre 2018. Ils seront disponibles dans les autres bibliothèques très bientôt.
